The School
|
Haddon Dene School was established in 1929 by Miss Olive
Vyse, and has grown to become a co-educational Preparatory
School for approximately 180
children, aged 3 to 11 years.
It is situated in a quiet, but central position in
Broadstairs, occupying two buildings which house the
Preparatory Department, with children from 3 to 7 years,
and the Junior Department, with children from 7 to 11
years.
The aim of Haddon Dene School is to enable the children's
potential abilities to be fully developed in a happy and
caring environment. There is a firm discipline in the
school, which provides a stable framework where qualities of
honesty, self-confidence and consideration for others are
fostered.
The School Day extends from 8.55 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. according to age. There
is an Early Bird facility whereby children may be left in school from 8.00
a.m. each morning. A Homework Club facility is available until 5.00 p.m.
each evening.

Preparatory School

The Reception Class (Age 3) has 10 to 12 children who attend school 5
mornings weekly, from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon. It is important that a
child's first experiences of school are happy, and that a positive attitude
is encouraged. To this end, a wide range of educational activities, such as
Language Work, Number Work, Computing, Music, Games, Movement, Art and
social training skills, are pursued in a structured situation.
Class P1 (Age 4) has approximately 18 children, and continues to build on
early learning, with more emphasis being placed on acquiring reading,
writing and number skills. Children in P1 initially stay for 5 mornings,
but this is gradually increased when the child is ready. The decision to
increase to full time is taken jointly by the parents and the class
teacher.
Class P2 (Age 5), Class P3 (Age 6) and Class P4 (Age 7). There are
approximately 18 children in each of these classes where a mixture of
traditional and modern methods are used in the academic teaching. All
children have a class teacher, and will have specialist teachers for Music,
Movement, Games and Swimming (at Ramsgate Pool). Some homework is set in P3
and P4 and it is hoped that parents will regularly hear their children read
books that are sent home, and help in the learning of Spellings and tables.
At the end of P4 the children transfer to the Junior School.

Junior School
|
In the Junior School each class, of approximately 18 children, has a class
teacher, but the timetable becomes more clearly defined with specialist
teachers in Science, Music, Art, Drama, Elocution, Choir, Games, Computing
and Swimming. French is taught throughout the Junior School. Private Music
Tuition is also available after school.
All children do homework and there are school examinations at the end of
the Summer Term. High standards of work are expected and the curriculum is
based on the requirements of a sound, balanced education to develop a
well-rounded child who is prepared for the future. The National Curriculum
is followed in the core subjects and all the children take the Key Stage
tests.
The school has a good examination record, and all children take part in the
annual Kent Examinations which lead to selection for Secondary Education,
or entry into other Independent Schools. This record is achieved by working
in small classes where children get the attention they need, and their
problems can be identified and corrected.

Registration, Admission and Fees
|
Parents seeking admission for their children should make an appointment to
visit the School and meet the Headmaster. After this, the registration form
should be completed and returned to the school with the registration fee,
which is non-returnable. A test date is then arranged when the child will
spend a morning in the appropriate class and, subject to the results, an
offer of a place will be made.
Details of the current fees are set out below, and must be paid on, or
before, the first day of term for which they are due. A full term's written
notice is required if a child is to be withdrawn, otherwise a full term's
fees must be paid.
