We’ve had a very busy time celebrating Reading Week at Haddon Dene. Monday saw the launch of our annual Readathon. We hope children are enjoying their chosen books and will raise lots of money to support children in hospitals. After the children have completed their Readathon, you will be able to pay sponsorship money online at readforgood.org/sponsor. On Tuesday, Lauren Busby, author of ‘Woblin’ visited our school. She read her book to the children and ran a Q and A session. Lauren stayed for a book signing and photograph opportunity. Lauren said, “The school could not have been more welcoming, and the pupils were just so kind and enthusiastic!”
On Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtime the children were invited to visit another special guest. A Mexican Storyteller read books to the groups in English and Spanish and the children took part in games and craft activities. All gathered on a special blanket adorned with dolls to listen to the stories. Many thanks go to Olga Bull for sharing her wonderful traditions and culture with our children.
On Thursday, we were truly lucky to welcome Polly Dunbar to our school. There were two particularly excited little girls (Pearl and Mabel) who watched their Aunty Polly with special interest! Polly read some of her books to the children and talked about becoming an author and illustrator. She explained how books are created, showing them a dummy book and how to draw illustrations. Polly also is co-founder of Long Nose Puppets, an award- winning theatre company and the children were able to meet some of her characters. It was a fantastic day and we would like to thank Polly for giving up her time, and her brother, Ben (Mabel and Pearl’s daddy) for organising this and making this special day possible.
