Cross Country at Hartsdown Leisure Centre

On a freezing cold January morning our brave cross country runners battled it out against children from every Thanet Primary School. We achieved some fantastic results with many of our runners gaining top ten places. Mrs Crompton was very pleased with the whole team; she particularly commended the terrific improvement of some of our runners notably Soraya and Zack.

Our young chefs have been working hard in the kitchen again this week, this time they have been busily cooking and eating pizza.

Year 6 – Cooking for Gold Competition

Whilst on the topic of cooking, I am hoping that some of our Year 6 Chefs will take up the challenge of the fantastic National ‘Cook It’ competition. The Guild of Food Writers are asking children aged 10 to 14 years old to create a delicious and imaginative two course meal with their favourite sportsperson in mind. Snow Update

The school will close at 3.30 due to the treacherous road conditions. No after school clubs. The Haddon Dene Festival of Speech and Drama will go ahead, join us from 1.45 for a 2.00 pm start.

Please can families who use the school minibus be prepared to collect and drop off their children from the nearest gritted main road, Rob will call families to plan.

The school will be open today however the roads are extremely icey so please judge if it is safe for your family to make the journey.

The school will close at 3:30pm and there will not be any after school clubs unless temperatures rise later today.

Children may wear their PE kit all day today.

It’s 100 years since Captain Scott and his team of British explorers arrived at the South Pole. Thank you to Year 5 for re-enacting the history of Captain Scott, who died attempting to be the first to reach the South Pole. The year 5 children performed with confidence, impressive articulation and very good humour.

Scott of the Antarctic (1868 – 1912) The whaling ship Terra Nova left Cardiff, Wales in June 1910 and the expedition set off from base the following October, with mechanical sledges, ponies and dogs. However, the sledges and ponies could not cope with the conditions and the expedition carried on without them, through appalling weather and increasingly tough terrain. In mid December, the dog teams turned back, leaving the rest to face the ascent of the Beardmore Glacier and the polar plateau. By January 1912, only five remained: Scott, Wilson, Oates, Bowers and Evans.

On 17 January, they reached the pole, only to find that a Norwegian party led by Roald Amundsen, had beaten them there. They started the 1,500 km journey back. Evans died in mid-February. By March, Oates was suffering from severe frostbite and, knowing he was holding back his companions, walked out into the freezing conditions never to be seen again. The remaining three men died of starvation and exposure in their tent on 29 March 1912. They were in fact only 20 km from a pre-arranged supply depot. Eight months later, a search party found the tent, the bodies and Scott’s diary. The bodies were buried under the tent, with a cairn of ice and snow to mark the spot.

Chinese New Year – The Year of the Dragon

Often regarded as one of the most important signs, the dragon is the most auspicious and powerful animal in the Chinese zodiac which is also associated with prosperity. This lunar year is the year of water dragon – occurring only in 60 years – which is
considered even more auspicious. So may the year of the Dragon bring good luck to all our Haddon Dene Families!

Healthy Food

We would like to politely remind everyone that children are not to eat crisps or chocolate at school. This means that they should not be given crisps or chocolate for tuck or at before or after school clubs. Our PTFA discussed this matter this week and have found that there was consensus with the rule above.
